  • Devils D Salmela leaves ice on stretcher (AP)
    New Jersey Devils defensemen Anssi Salmela of Finland has been taken off the ice on a stretcher after taking a hard shoulder to the face from the Philadelphia Flyers' Jeff Carter. Moments after scoring a short-handed goal that gave the Devils a 2-0 lead in the second period Monday, Salmela was struck hard by Carter's right shoulder as he skated by.

    Bob Gainey listens to Montreal Canadiens' president Pierre Boivin, center, speak at a news conference in Montreal, Monday, Feb. 8, 2010, announcing Gainey's departure as general manager of the NHL hockey team and the appointment of Pierre Gauthier as the new GM of the hockey club.

    From his time as captain to his tenure as general manager, Bob Gainey has spent a lifetime providing leadership for the Montreal Canadiens. Now, he's handing the reins to a trusted colleague. Gainey stepped aside Monday as Montreal's general manager and was replaced by assistant Pierre Gauthier in a surprising front-office shake-up for hockey's most storied franchise.
