A memorabilia project built on passion
If you are Canadian than you get it. If you aren't, then there are some things you learned about Canadians during the Olympic games. We like to drink beer, hang out with moose and beaver, and did I mention we love hockey! Being a Canadian and hockey fan, you could have not scripted a better ending to the Olympics. Sidney Crosby scoring the overtime “Golden Goal” to give Team Canada the win (in Canada) just felt right. Although my kids are young, I was glad that they got to see that and experience the excitement. I think it started when we saw the torch run past us just a few blocks from our house. I have never been so glued to the TV during the Olympics. I am sure the fact that the games took place in Canada was a big part of that, but it was great to see such passion in Canada. We are usually very subdued people, but for two weeks we were all able to wear Red and White and be a little bit cocky.
As a hockey memorabilia collector I am always looking for that unique piece. So I started to think of a project that I could work on that would be a keepsake from the Olympics. So I had a look at some of the Official Olympic swag and found these amazing posters for Men’s Hockey. I started off with the idea that I would try to amass autographs from players from every team that competed, but I realized that would take me a lifetime. So when Canada won the Gold, it was a no-brainer. I would get every member of Team Canada to autograph the poster. Now I know this won’t be easy and will probably take me years to complete, but that is what makes it so challenging and fun.
Now I don’t know if my son is going to have a future in hockey like Sidney Crosby (no pressure), but I am hoping that this amazing piece of Canadiana will be an inspiration to him. Hopefully he will be involved in the process and someday inherit it. It certainly would look great next to his Gold Medal someday.
So below is a picture of the poster and my checklist for the next few years. I know it won’t be easy, but I plan to document (on video) each autograph that I get and post it to the site.
